SHHH Hispanic Outreach

Sirviendo a la Communidad Hispanica

The following excerpt is from Hispanic Online:

Former HUD Secretary Henry Cisneros sees a golden age for Hispanic Americans.

Cisneros said Hispanics make up a sizable portion of the populations in the largest states in the country. They represent one-third of Californians, one-fourth of Texans and large shares in New York and Florida.

The 2000 Census indicated there are 35 million Hispanics in the United States, Cisneros said.

Hispanic Public Awareness Action Plan

Primary GOAL:
To increase awareness of SHHH Services in Hispanic Communities

Secondary GOAL:
To increase Hispanic Participation and Membership in SHHH

To get started, SHHH National should formulate an awareness action plan encompassing the following five major activities:

1. Conduct an awareness and sensitivity training within SHHH National office based on hearing loss and ethnic culture

2. Outline SHHHs role in disseminating information to the Hispanic population
a) Provide brochures in Spanish
b) Provide Spanish translation of Web site information
c) Request PSA in Hispanic media

3. Implement strategies for face-to-face contact in the Hispanic community as necessitated by ethnic culture
a) Contact key leaders and ask for references
b) Invite Hispanic community leaders to participate
c) Join and support Hispanic events

4. Measure public awareness efforts

5. Request feedback and consumer input

Suggestions for Outreach:

The subject of language interpreters has been discussed recently and I would like to suggest that you try the school systems in your areas as they employ many language interpreters for the students and parents. They may be willing to work with SHHH.

Carlos' input on facts and the previous document on diversity is something for a future "Chapter Leaders Manual". There can be some email sent out to the state coordinators etc. from national in order to survey the groups. Furthermore the Seattle organizers (and others too) can write a communication to the board, Beth Wilson, and other national SHHH people with a comment and seeking more input on this specific application, especially given Susan Matts enthusiasm for making this a reality.
